Comprehensive Eye Care from an Experienced Optometric Team

Eye exams are an essential part of preventive health care, regardless of your age or overall health.

Nearly 11 million Americans need some kind of vision correction, and eye exams are important for determining your required prescription. But they do much more than this. Eye exams are crucial for detecting and ensuring the swift treatment of vision-threatening ocular diseases. They can also uncover other health conditions seemingly unrelated to your vision, like diabetes, heart disease, or cancer.

At Diablo Valley Optometric Group, your ocular health is the most important thing. We have heavily invested in advanced diagnostic equipment that allows us to detect and diagnose even the smallest signs of eye disease. The earlier an eye disease is treated, the more successful that treatment is.

Routine Eye Exams Keep Your Eyes Strong

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends annual eye exams for all patients. However, everyone is different. Our optometrists at Diablo Valley Optometric Group may recommend a different exam frequency for you based on your ocular needs.

Annual exams are usually recommended so we can really get to know you and your eyes. We can establish a baseline for your ocular health, which allows us to document even the smallest changes in your vision. These changes may indicate a more serious problem, so we can start immediate treatment, potentially saving your eyesight.

The Eye Exam

At Diablo Valley Optometric Group, we go above and beyond what’s expected during a standard eye exam. We include several tests that look for eye problems, conditions, diseases, and overall health concerns, like diabetes or high blood pressure.

Every one of our comprehensive eye exams includes:

  • A discussion about your vision history, including any current or past vision problems, your family history, and overall health conditions.
  • An analysis of your visual needs at home, work, and leisure. Different tasks require different eyewear.
  • A vision assessment and prescription updates, including corneal measurements (how your eyes reflect light).
  • Glaucoma testing. Glaucoma causes damage to your optic nerve and can lead to blindness.
  • Cataract testing, which checks your eyes’ lenses for clouding.
  • A binocular vision assessment. This assessment looks at how your eyes move together and if they’re aligned.
  • An evaluation of your color vision and depth perception are assessed when necessary.

The Aging Eye

As we get older, our eyes undergo many changes and are at a higher risk of developing age-related eye diseases.

Those in their mid to late 40s may develop a condition called presbyopia. Presbyopia is a natural part of aging that happens to almost everyone. It occurs when the eye’s lens loses its flexibility, which is required to focus on objects at varying distances. Those with presbyopia, then, have difficulty focusing on nearby objects.

As you reach 60, regular eye exams allow us to look for various age-related eye problems, including:

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

an eye disease that affects the macula and causes central vision loss.

clouding of the eyes’ natural lenses.

a complication of diabetes. It is the result of progressive damage to the tiny blood vessels that supply the retina.

a lack of tears or tears of poor quality that affect the health of the eyes.

a group of eye diseases characterized by damage to the optic nerve resulting in loss of peripheral vision.
