Bringing Clarity Back to Your Life

Our eyes have a natural lens that bends light that enters the eye to help us see clearly. When we’re born, the lens starts clear. But as we age, so do our eyes.

Cataracts are an unfortunate but natural part of aging that develops over time. As they progress, cataracts can obstruct your entire field of vision, leaving a cloudy haze over the world around you. Cataracts occur when the naturally clear lens inside the eye becomes cloudy, making your vision blurry, fuzzy, or washed out.

At Diablo Valley Optometric Group, we have the expertise to help you prevent, manage, and treat cataracts. We aim to give you the tools necessary to enjoy your vision for as long as possible without interruption. If you have questions about cataracts or how we can help you treat them, please give us a call or book an appointment using our online form.

Causes & Symptoms of Cataracts

The most common cause of cataracts is age. The eyes are constantly changing, and after age 40, proteins begin to break down, causing the lens inside the eye to become cloudy. After age 60, the cloudiness can become much more apparent. However, everyone is different, and some individuals may not have any vision problems until much later in life.

Some other causes of cataracts include:

  • A family history of cataracts
  • Medical problems such as diabetes
  • Smoking
  • An eye injury or surgery
  • Spending time in the sun without sunglasses
  • Using certain medications

Cataracts typically develop slowly over time. But certain external factors can cause them to develop more quickly.

Symptoms of cataracts include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Seeing double
  • Increased light sensitivity
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Colors appear washed out or faded

Preventing Cataracts

Although cataracts cannot be prevented altogether, you can minimize your risk of developing them early. One of the best ways to do so is to always protect your eyes from the harmful UV rays in sunlight. You can be sure your eyes are protected by purchasing and wearing sunglasses with 100% UV protection, or getting a clear anti-UV coating on your everyday eyeglasses.

You can also adopt some healthy habits to reduce your risk of developing cataracts. These include:

  • Eat a diet rich in vitamin C & E
  • Quit smoking
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Control your blood sugar
  • Exercise regularly

However, above all, the best way to keep your eyes healthy is to have regular eye exams. Your optometrist knows precisely what to look for to identify early signs of eye disease. If you’d like to book an appointment, give us a call or use our convenient online form!
