Keeping Your World in Focus

Contact lenses are thin plastic lenses that sit directly on the eye to provide vision correction for various vision issues. Many patients prefer to wear contact lenses to glasses as a less bulky alternative to achieve clear vision.

For individuals that live active lifestyles or have occupations where eyeglasses can get in the way, contact lenses are a great option. However, if you feel like you’d like to explore contact lenses as an option, it’s best to have your eyes thoroughly examined by your optometrist.

At Diablo Valley Optometric Group, we’re dedicated to providing you with fully comprehensive eye care so you can make the most of your vision. If contact lenses interest you, it’s a good idea to book an appointment to have your eyes evaluated and measured for the best style for your eyes.

Standard Contact Lenses

Soft Lenses

Soft contact lenses are some of the most common contact lenses, made from a flexible silicone hydrogel that forms to the surface of your eye. These lenses are comfortable and easy to use but may not work for patients with irregular corneas.

Rigid gas permeable lenses are stiff lenses that are made from a plastic material that allows oxygen to pass through to the cornea. They are generally more durable and resistant to deposit buildup, but they can be uncomfortable at first and harder to get used to due to their rigid material.

Specialty Contact Lenses

Multifocal Lenses

Similar to bifocal or multifocal eyeglasses, multifocal contact lenses have more than one prescription in each lens. Different styles exist, such as alternating rings of near and far distance or a half-and-half split where the top is far distance, and the bottom is near. The style that is right for you will depend on your needs, and your optometrist will discuss that with you at the time of your appointment.

Scleral contact lenses are larger-than-average rigid gas permeable lenses. They vault over the cornea and rest on the sclera (whites of the eyes), leaving a space between the back of the lens and the front of the eye. This area allows fluid to continually bathe the cornea, which can aid individuals with dry eye disease or increase the effectiveness of contacts for patients with irregular corneas, such as keratoconus.

Hybrid lenses are a combination of soft and rigid gas permeable lenses. They’re designed to provide the comfort of soft lenses with the clarity of hard lenses and are much easier to adjust than fully rigid lenses. They’re typically worn by individuals with corneal irregularities that find standard styles of contact lenses uncomfortable.

If contact lenses are on your mind, we’d love to assess your eyes, so you know just what type will suit you best. Please give us a call or use our online form to book your appointment today!
