Combatting the “Silent Thief of Sight”

Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders characterized by damage to the optic nerve, the part of the eye that sends images to the brain. The damage can cause significant vision loss and can even lead to blindness.

Often, the early stages of glaucoma are left to progress as there are no visible symptoms until permanent damage has already set in. The best way to prevent glaucoma is to have regular eye exams so your optometrist can have a close look at your eyes and run tests to ensure everything is in tip-top shape.

At Diablo Valley Optometric Group, we take the time to make sure all of your concerns are addressed so you can get the treatment you need. We use state-of-the-art technology to detect, diagnose, and treat a range of eye conditions so you can feel confident you’re getting top-quality care. If you’re interested in what we can do to help, please give us a call or use our online form to book your appointment today!

What Causes Glaucoma

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the US. It often affects individuals over the age of 40, but in some cases, a child can be born with glaucoma (referred to as congenital glaucoma). You may have an increased risk of glaucoma if you:

  • Have a family history of glaucoma
  • Are over the age of 40
  • Have thinner corneas
  • Have chronic eye inflammation
  • Take medication that increases intraocular pressure

The most common type of glaucoma occurs due to increased internal eye pressure putting stress on the optic nerve and surrounding tissues, causing damage. However, individuals with normal eye pressure can also develop glaucoma.

Types of Glaucoma

Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma

Primary open-angle glaucoma is one of the most common forms of glaucoma. It often develops slowly without any apparent symptoms, making many individuals with glaucoma unaware of the condition until it’s caused significant vision loss. The first signs of vision loss attributed to primary open-angle glaucoma usually affect peripheral vision, but it can advance to central vision. If left untreated, primary open-angle glaucoma can lead to complete blindness.

Acute angle-closure glaucoma is a less common type of glaucoma, but it’s much more severe. It develops rapidly due to a sudden increase in intraocular pressure, with associated symptoms including severe eye pain, nausea, eye redness, blurred vision, and seeing halos around lights. These symptoms are a direct result of an acute attack, which is considered a medical emergency. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, go to your nearest emergency room.

Detecting, Diagnosing, & Treating Glaucoma

Although glaucoma cannot be wholly prevented, if caught and treated early, it can be controlled. Different medications or surgeries are available to slow and prevent further vision loss, but if you’ve lost any vision to glaucoma, it cannot be restored.

At Diablo Valley Optometric Group, we use advanced technology and diagnostic tools to evaluate your eyes’ health and pinpoint early signs of glaucoma. We use 2 types of tonometry, a technology that measures your eye’s internal pressure, a telltale sign of glaucoma. The 2 styles of tonometers we use are:
