Is LASIK Right For You?

One of the most common refractive surgeries is laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis or LASIK. For individuals that are tired of dealing with corrective eyewear like glasses or contact lenses, refractive surgery is an attractive option. LASIK is incredibly popular due to its fast healing times and quick results.

Most people are eligible candidates for LASIK, but it’s always a good idea to chat with your optometrist to ensure it’s the best option for you. At Diablo Valley Optometric Group, we have the tools and resources to give you the best pre-and-post operative care when it comes to laser eye surgery. If you’re interested in LASIK and what it can do for your vision, please give us a call or fill out our online book appointment form!

What is LASIK?

Laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis, or LASIK, is a laser surgery used to treat refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The procedure typically only takes around a half-hour, after which you’ll be monitored for a few minutes before you can go home to rest.

The procedure involves making a flap in your cornea’s outer layer, called the epithelium, with a precise blade or laser. The flap is then flipped back to reshape the underlying corneal tissue. Depending on your refractive error, your surgeon will use an excimer laser to steepen, flatten, or smooth out your cornea. They’ll then replace the flap to act as a natural bandage that will reattach in 2 to 3 minutes.

After the procedure, your eyes may feel scratchy and dry for a few hours. Your vision may be blurry for the next day, but most patients see significant vision improvement within 24 hours. Your eyes should be fully healed within a week.

Around 90% of people who have LASIK end up with vision between 20/20 and 20/40 without glasses or contact lenses.

Who is a Candidate for LASIK?

To have LASIK, you must meet certain requirements to ensure the procedure is safe and efficient. Some of these requirements include:

  • You’re over 18 years old (ideally over 21, when your vision is more likely to have stopped changing).
  • Your eye prescription has not changed much in the last year.
  • Your refractive error is something LASIK can effectively treat.
  • Your corneas are thick and healthy.
  • Your overall ocular health is good.
  • You need to be aware that you may still need glasses or contacts following the surgery.

If LASIK is a procedure that interests you, we’d be happy to help! Please give us a call or use our online form to book your appointment today!
